Authentic Assessments
Modeled: Over 75% of STEM core and elective teachers regularly use multiple indicators of success, including knowledge-and performance-based assessments (projects, portfolios, etc.)

At HES, our teachers understand that students can demonstrate their learning in many ways. It is common to see students working on projects, solving problems, or creating visual representations as evidence of their learning. Students take quizzes and tests to show what they know and can do, but they do not offer the complete picture. Students may also create a product or make a presentation. Through a county wide initiative, all teachers are expected to implement Learning Focused Strategies. 100% of teachers at HES have been trained and regularly use multiple indicators of success.  All Kindergarten through 3rd grade teachers use Reading 3D to drive their instruction.  100% of 1st through 5th grade teachers utilize Math IXL to determine student success rates.  Rubrics are also an integral part in determining students understanding in grades K through 5th.  A part of learning focused strategies include the summarizer. The summarizer indicates if students have learned the objectives.

In Kindergarten through second grade, teachers report student learning on standards based report cards.  Each standard area is assessed using both performance tasks and knowledge based assessments. Teachers work together to analyze both data sets to make decisions about students’ mastery for each goal.

At HES, teachers use PBL instruction to aid mastery of objectives. All of our PBL’s include many types of assessment that include self evaluation and project rubrics. Teachers use these evaluations to help plan for the next PBL.

The teachers also use technology, such as Kahoot and Google Classroom, to assess students quickly and gain instant feedback for their instruction.  Classrooms throughout the school utilize the SeeSaw app to create and share online portfolios and videos that showcase their concept mastery. Some grades use Amplify’s Small Group Advisor to help create small guided reading  groups based on common needs. Weekly PLC meetings revolve around the compiling and analyzing of student data to adjust instruction and interventions, student grouping, and create assessments.Minutes and data are shared with administrators and our Instructional Coach to give them a chance to look at growth and find areas for improvement. Data is collected in all content areas through formative and summative assessments.
