Computer and Web-based Technology

Prepared: STEM teachers daily use computer-based, online, mobile, virtual, and/or other technology tools, as appropriate, to support instruction; the technology is often in the hands of students.

Students use technology both to learn and to communicate their learning. In math, it has become a common practice for students to use iPads to record their thinking through pictures, videos, and Educreations.  IXL math, Accelerated Reading and RAZ kids as well as G Suite for Education are technology tools used daily to support student learning.  All HES students and staff have a G Suite account allowing our teachers to provide instruction through their Google Classroom as well as using the Flipped Classroom strategy.  Students and teachers access technology through their classroom chromebooks, iPad and laptop carts, as well as the school computer lab.

The Digital Literacy teacher is teaching block-based programming to all students grades K-5. She collaborates with classroom teachers in order to reinforce classroom concepts with technology tools, such as creating Google Slides of notable North Carolinians with 4th graders.

3rd Grade students were using the engineering process to create a ramp that would allow their cars to go however far their group though of hearing the imagine step of the process. Each group taped the process as they built their ramps. They could only use materials found around the room. They had to think of how friction would play a part in how far their cars would travel.
